Friday File: The rise of Egan Bernal, Tro Bro Leon Panache

Egan Bernal is the next climbing talent to come out of Colombia. He won the white jersey off Hugh Carthy (Cannondale Drapac) in the final stage of the Tour of the Alps. Bernal is only 20 years old and eagerly feted by WorldTour teams; Sky, Movistar and Bahrain Merida. Rightly so, he won the bronze medal in the 2015 Junior World MTB Championships and the canny Gianni Savio signed him for his Androni Giocattoli team. The mustached manager knew of the emerging climbing talent and in the contract signed with Bernal, included a premio di valorizzazione, a bonus for development.

"That is in recognition of the work we have done. I contracted Bernal when he was still very unknown and almost rushed on the road. We helped him to develop slowly last year, this year we do the same. I think it's only good that our hard work is financially recognized. For Bernal, I'm glad he gets the chance to move to a big team. We are considering winning a series of bonuses for winning certain matches, but I will be especially happy and proud to win a big round."

Damien Gaudin (Armee de Terre) won the petit Paris-Roubaix and one of my favorite races, Tro Bro Leon. Here's the incredible race and his emotional finish, the best cycling victory celebration ever.
